Tommy Beresford will captain the England team in the Coronation Cup match against Argentina, on International Day here at Guards Polo Club on Saturday, 27 July.
This will be Tommy’s third time as England captain, having led the team to victory in both the Westchester Cup and Coronation Cup in 2023. Tommy was also part of the winning Coronation Cup team in 2022 when England defeated Uruguay. This 28-year-old is England’s highest-rated player and became the first England player in 22 years - and only the fifth England player since World War II - to reach an eight-goal handicap. This was the result of a blistering 2023 season that also saw him lift the Gold Cup (British Open) with UAE Polo Team on their way to the Victor Ludorum 22-goal title. He made his Argentine Open debut a winning one in December and is currently playing high-goal for the UAE Polo Team once again.
Tommy is looking forward to Coronation Cup day: “It’s an honour to be picked to play for England; as players it’s what we strive for from the beginning of the year, we all aim to be able to play for England, and then to be picked as captain is even more of a privilege. I’m very excited for the day to come, I’ve been lucky enough to play in a few Coronation Cups now."
England has faced Argentina five times in the Coronation Cup and the visiting team has taken the trophy on all previous occasions. With two of the strongest national teams in the world, it promises to be an unmissable day of polo. “It’s my first time against Argentina and no one can neglect the fact that they are the best team in the world and they have the best players in the world,” said Tommy. “It’s going to be a huge challenge for England, but I think we can organise ourselves as well as possible to give it our best run and it’s a very exciting day. I can’t wait for it to come around and we’ll give it our best shot.”
The final England team will be confirmed shortly, in addition to the Young England team that will play against Young Argentina in the opening match of the day.
