Some of polo’s biggest names will take to the polo
fields at Guards Polo Club, Windsor Great Park, in the coming weeks to contest
the Cartier Queen’s Cup. Ten teams have entered this year’s competition, which
is sponsored by Cartier for the ninth year, including the World’s Number One
Player Adolfo Cambiaso. He holds the record for the greatest number of wins in
this tournament over the past six decades. This year he will be playing
alongside his son for the first time in the appropriately named Next Generation
team.
This year’s tournament is particularly significant in
the history of polo as the coveted trophy will be celebrating its 60th
anniversary in 2020. The Cup was a personal gift from HM The Queen to Guards
Polo Club in 1960 and has been continuously played for since then. Some of the
sport’s most influential players have added their name to the Cup, not least
HRH The Prince of Wales in 1986.
Cartier has a long-standing tradition of supporting
polo and is delighted to continue its involvement in the prestigious, high-goal
Queen’s Cup tournament. Laurent Feniou, Managing Director of Cartier UK, said:
“It will be incredible to see such powerful games played by some of the very
best polo players in the world, during this year’s Cartier Queen’s Cup tournament,
despite the unpredictable situation surrounding the 2020 event. I am inspired
by the resilience and talent of these wonderful players capturing the true
essence and spirit of the sport.”
The first matches are scheduled to be played on Tuesday 28 July and the final will be played at Guards Polo Club at 3.30pm on Sunday 23 August. All polo in the UK is currently being played behind closed doors but Guards Polo Club is ready to allow spectators as soon as the government relaxes the relevant Covid-19 regulations.
